Watching the film "Turtles can fly" by Bahaman Ghobadi, was a moving experience. In today's times where we ,who live in the city have access to news and information, we come across a war torn background of a kurdish refugee camp where getting a satellite dish is what makes children put everything at stake. The worst is when we see the older people using the innocent young ones .They are asked to remove land mines from fields. Of course they are paid for doing so. The money comes when these are sold and satellite dish is bought for the village that wants access to the news.
Few thoughts immediately come to my mind after watching the film.
Firstly, do we really need war?
The reason why I ask this is when we know so many innocent orphaned children are in such a pathetic shape for no fault of theirs , is it worth it?
Second, in the age of excellent communication why cant we settle all this by talking?
Yes. I feel we can and should try this route more than anything else.
Third, when we are capable of thinking and have emotions how do we as a group turn selfish when it comes to our own fellow beings and that too children. more compassion is seen in animals at times. Just because the children are not ours, does that mean we become insentive to them? Why do we stoop so low?
India has a tradition of culture that has always fostered brotherhood and tolerance. But I see times are changing and we too need to change stance. Here I would like to share what an Indian army general said during war when the enemy refused to accept the dead body of its soldiers.
" We are neither enemies, nor hindu or muslim. We must be humans first"
The soldier was given a respectful burial.
In the race for prosperity a lot of things are lost. Let our hope in mankind remain by our acts of love and care.
